Teaching – a rewarding profession?
At some point of someone’s life a question arises - why people even become teachers? What is it that is so attractive in this profession? Why do people continue to apply for becoming a teacher over the years when they know it is going to be tough? The answer is obviously not the money because it is a common knowledge that teachers all over the world cannot boast of being too rich as their salary is ridiculously small. It must be something else then. The teacher gets some rewards (not financial) for being a teacher. What are they?
It is a question that is always important as this profession is not going to ever cease. Unlike some current trends, teaching will forever be an issue as new people continue to appear who need to be educated. And we are not even talking about the eternal personal drive of self-educating and lifelong learning. That is why the question is that – is being a teacher a rewarding profession?
Firstly, it is completely obvious that a teacher makes a huge impact on children and their lives. Almost everyone remembers their first teacher or the one who was outstanding and learned them something. It cannot be physically possible to see this impact as people do not change overnight but in the long run your efforts will prove to be efficient. Secondly, the teachers may ignite a spark in someone and support them when they are down. There are lots and lots of stories how the teachers managed to create an interest in a failing student and make him an A-student or even a scientist. Thirdly, you are surrounded by love from your students. It is not a secret that children often bring little gift and presents as they admire a teacher. Imagine being loved undoubtedly no matter what you do. Who, if not the teacher, gets it during their work? And last but not the least – teachers are always an inspiration for someone. For their students, for their colleagues and even the unknown people, the figure of a teacher is something to be inspired from as they dedicate their life to something so hard but so important – teaching others.
However, some people say that being a teacher is hard and using all this mental rewards will not help you to pay rent (as it has already been mentioned a teacher’s salary is not so big if not to say tiny). Teachers have to be on their edge all day teaching classes, watching the kids, being covered in paperwork and they are not even paid enough for their efforts. Working long hours is another issue – you constantly bring your work home grading the homework and preparing for the classes. Moreover, you have to deal with the students who do not want to sit in the classroom or bully someone or are being bullied. That is your goal to solve such problems while you may not even want to do that. You also have to constantly be in the connection with the parents which is a whole another issue – they might think you are to blame in the failing of their child.
Considering all the aforementioned facts the work of a teacher might be stressful enough. Some people will never even think about becoming a teacher as they say it is a thankless job. But I think of those disadvantages as minor facts because they are completely unnoticeable among all of the pros of being a teacher mentioned above. Imagine being a role model for not just one person but for a whole class. In my opinion, it is rewarding to become a teacher just to feel that.
Teaching will always be one of the most discussed and most loved professions of all time. My guess is that people will never stop becoming teachers as they are driven by all of the rewarding factors. Being passionate about your job is the best thing that could happen to anyone and being passionate about teaching will be certainly paid off by your students.
