Charles Dickens, an English realist writer, fully reveals the problem of the
people’s plight in the novel «Oliver Twist». Through the story of the main
character - a child and the people around him - the writer outlines the fate of the
English people - destroyed, kept to survive by lies, theft, and force.
The hero of the novel, Oliver, was born in a workhouse, which initially put him
in the class of destitute people. Children grew stunted, exhausted, and always
hungry. Actually they did not live, but tried to survive. The fate of weak children
like Oliver was sealed and only a miracle could save them.
Any attempt to protest was severely suppressed and punished by the teachers.
«Obstinate» Oliver, for example, became one of the candidates for the gallows,
because he dared to ask for more gruel. He was put in solitary confinement,
severely flogged, and then attempted to hand over to a despotic chimney sweep
who had already beaten several boys to death, and an undertaker.
Having escaped from his master, Oliver received new life lessons in London,
where he was surrounded by criminals - a gang of thieves. The fence Fagin, the
housebreaker Bill Sikes and the prostitute Nancy tried to force the boy to turn into
theft, but Oliver showed the firmness of his character and refused to participate in
nefarious schemes.
By a happy coincidence, the boy's life path met the good old Mr. Brownlow
who gave him shelter. Without thinking of his own advantage, Mr. Brownlow
helped the child, who had been destined to be hanged in a workhouse, and then
became his foster father.
Oliver Twist is kind, truthful, virtuous, and no dirt of the surrounding world
can stain him. And the gentle people who are met on his way are a kind of reward
for the boy's loyalty. So, Mr. Brownlow is the first unselfish rescuer of an orphan,
whom Oliver later loved with all his heart.
In the last pages of the novel, there is a touch of sadness, although Oliver's life
has improved, he has found his home and a loving family.

The character of Hamlet is central in Shakespeare's tragedy. He enters into a

Hamlet is a man of honor. He will never be able to forgive lie and deception of
his loved ones. This indicates the inflexibility of the character. In the collision of
the hero with the outside world, the main conflict of the work is manifested: man
and society. Hamlet cannot live in such a contradictory world, where evil and
cruelty reign.
The external conflict of the tragedy turns into an internal one. Hamlet feels his
loneliness; he is not like the people around him. This becomes the reason for
constant thinking about his presence in the world. He constantly strives for the
truth. He does not consider himself the best because he knows that he has
something to strive for. Hamlet is neither a self-satisfied nor arrogant person.
Hamlet is a very intelligent and educated man. The author puts in his mouth
serious reflections on the essence of society and the world as a whole. In
Shakespeare's tragedy, there are quite a lot of Hamlet's monologues, among which
the well-known reflections: «To be or not to be?» stand out. All monologues
reveal the essence of the hero, his internal contradictions.
Analysis of Hamlet’s character allows saying that the hero is ambiguous.
Internally, he is very contradictory. The search for truth leads him to deep
reflections that present Hamlet with a challenge . The desire to take revenge
constantly goes into the background; the arguments of the hero, which are the
major plank in the tragedy, are put forward.
External circumstances, which can include the death of his father, the betrayal
of his uncle and mother, cause the destruction of all the moral principles of
Hamlet. The reality, the main character enters into a struggle with, destroys all his
ideals: love, friendship, and honor. However, Hamlet wants to resist evil, so he
decides to avenge his father's death. Hamlet's revenge is not a sign of cruelty; it is a
desire for justice. One small detail is important: the hero does not want to kill the
father's murderer when the last one is praying. That indicates the purity of the
Hamlet's plans. And the fact that Hamlet wants to take revenge is contrary to his
worldview and view of his own life. This is where all the inconsistency of the
character, which bears both individual features and features of the era, is shown.

“Is He Living or is He Dead?” by Mark Twain

Mark Twain's writing is completely imbued with the theme of deception and
lies. The writer satirizes, censures and sometimes even justifies them in his works.
In the short story «Is He Living or is He Dead?», the author tries to develop a
popular idea that to become famous, a person must die. One of the heroes of the
story is a well-known artist, Francois Millet, who, like many other artists, poets,
and composers, had a case in point. He lived very poor, receiving very modest
money for his paintings. However, immediately after the death, he quickly
«became fashionable», with his works being sold at fantastic prices.
One of the artists, who led a half-starved existence together with Francois
Millet, came to the idea that the death of an artist could save them from poverty
and constant debts. The choice turned next to Millet.
Artists cannot be denied knowledge of the psychology of newspaper
consumers: they never said that «a new painter had been discovered», never
praised the hero of the note — a famous artist does not need it. They just expressed
deep concern about his health status. It was this tactic that made the artist famous,
repeatedly increasing the price of his works.
The name of the artist and his paintings has raised such a stir that the business
urgently needed to be stopped. Friends told Francois Millet to «go to bed and begin
to waste away pretty fast».
The solemn funeral of «the greatest artist» became an event for the whole
world. It is notable that Millet carried his own coffin himself, pretending to be a
distant relative of the deceased. The artist who told the narrator this story was most
of all happy with the fact that «For once they didn't starve a genius to death and
then put into other pockets the rewards he should have had himself».
«Is He Living, or is He Dead?» is a story of work, appreciation, and
remembrance.  Hans Christian Andersen’s tale of the caged bird was really the
story of an unappreciated artist only honored in death. This story is sure to make
readers brood while they laugh, as well as remember their caged birds—and
appreciate them.
I liked the story, because it didn’t just make me laugh, but also made me think
deeply about this axiom that we do not appreciate true talents while they are alive.
