Упражнение VII. Прочитайте, перепишите и письменно переведите текст. AGRICULTURE IN GREAT BRITAIN Unlike many parts of the world Britain has little or no waste land to bring into cultivation. Moreover, farms lose land needed for housing, factories, schools and roads. Another loss from the farm is labor. The British farmer is to produce more on less land with fewer men. To do so he has to use every tool placed at his disposal by the scientist and technologist. Some 2.5 per cent of Britain’s employed labor force is engaged in agriculture – a lower proportion than in any other major industrial country. However, because of the expansion of domestic agricultural production since the middle of the 20th century and the high level of productivity, Britain is able to produce nearly two-thirds of its own food. On the arable land cultivation is increasingly mechanized. Many useful machines are used by farmers. The soil is plowed with a tractor; crops are planted with different planting and sowing machines, grain crops are harvested with combines. The management and operation of the machines are the responsibility of one group of highly skilled and well-trained workers. Field sizes are reshaped and enlarged to make cultivation easier, and many hedge-rows are eliminated. Weeds are almost entirely controlled by means of herbicides. Crop varieties bred to meet the needs of mechanized farming are used exclusively. The use of fertilizers is heavy. It is essential to get the maximum economical yield.
