The US military medical education

1. The US Army Medical Service had no special college to provide the initial training of but enrolled the graduates of medical schools or general practitioners.

Translate the text ‘The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ in written form

The Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) is a

health science university run by the US federal government. It offers young men and women the opportunity to combine a career as a physician with that of a military officer. In this respect, the University is unique among medical schools in the United States. It currently has two mottos, one official – ‘Learning to Care For Those In Harm’s Way’ and one unofficial – ‘Providing Good Medicine In Bad Places’.

USUHS was created by the Congress under the Department of Defense in 1972 with the mission to provide the Uniformed Services of the Army, Navy, Air Force and the US Public Health Service with a cadre of dedicated career medical officers.

Upon admission students serve on active duty as reserve commissioned officers in grade 0-1 (Second Lieutenant in the Army and Air Force, Ensign in the Navy and the Public Health Service), and receive all the pay and benefits of their rank.

The first two years of the curriculum consist of preclinical instruction, with emphasis on the basic sciences. The last two years are devoted to clinical rotations and clinical instruction is provided at the University’s four main affiliated teaching hospitals.

In return for their education, graduates must fulfill a service obligation of seven years. Students are promoted to the 0-3 rank (Captain or Lieutenant, depending on the service) on graduation day.

Combining medicine and the military is a dual challenge. For those committed to it, however, the rewards are great: an excellent medical education and the opportunity to serve one’s country in a global medical practice.
