Modal Verbs Revision

Exercise 5. Translate the following sentences from English into Russian. Mind the meaning of the modal verbs.

Modal verbs are used to express: ability, possibility, probability, logical assumptions, permission, requests, offers, suggestions, advice, criticism, obligation, prohibition or necessity.

The modal verbs are: can, could, may, must, ought to, will, would, shall, should, have to, need. They take no –s in the 3rd person singular except for have to and need. They come before the subject in questions and take ‘not’ after them in negations. Except for ought to and have to, modal verbs are followed by an infinitive without ‘to’.

Conditions of the Participation in the MILMED COE courses and trainings. General Recommendations for Students

1. The MILMED COE courses and trainings are open for all medical personnel assigned to NATO/EU/UN and personnel at positions closely connected to multinational cooperation in the field of military medicine. To register and to access the most updated information regarding the COE courses and trainings you should visit the MILMED COE website.
2. The tuition fee must be transferred to the MILMED COE Bank account 30 days before the course kicks off.
3. The subject in case of the money transfer should include the ‘student name or at least the nationality’ and the name of the course or training.
4. Students of the military medical courses and trainings from NATO partner nations can be reimbursed up to 100%.
5. Travel/ lodging arrangements ought to be made no sooner than 8 weeks before the start of the course.
6. Those students who do not wish to stay in the barracks must make their own arrangements and are asked to inform the Course Administrator.
7. Reference documentation need to be read prior to the course start.
8. Lunch is provided at the course venues for approximately 4, - EUR per meal, if the participant has any dietary restrictions he or she must indicate it in the registration form, the menu details will be available on site.
9. The classification of the courses is NATO Unclassified. Students are allowed to bring laptops or mobile phone, but they must be switched off during classes.
10. If you have registered and are not able to participate, you have to inform the COE and your national course as soon as possible.

The NATO Centre of Excellence

for Military Medicine (MILMED COE)

It is an international military organisation with the core task to facilitate interoperability between the military medical services in NATO.

Our soldiers work in alliance. They operate together with their comrades from different nations in NATO’s missions. They fight and might get wounded. Then the first dressing might be applied by a soldier from another nation.

Just as our fighting troops, military medical professionals work together in the field and at home. They provide the highest quality of care within and between multinational medical units. This is where the NATO MILMED COE comes into play. Nations come from different backgrounds and with different traditions and procedures. We assist standardization, design courses and trainings for medical professionals and also, we support health surveillance and identify best practices and lessons. We provide tools that enable allies to achieve the high expectations towards military medicine in multinational theaters.

The global threat of terrorism, the spread of weapons of mass destruction and regional armed conflicts represent the main source of tension and security challenges in today’s world. This changing international security environment has accelerated NATO’s need for adaptation to the new global security threats. The transformation process is being implemented through improving existing and developing new capabilities in specific areas, such as for instance defence against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) attacks or improving interoperability of deployed forces. These efforts are undertaken via increased multinational cooperation. In the 2002 NATO Prague Summit, the Alliance has brought small, subject-specific, multinational and

thus effective organisations, the so called Centres of Excellence (COEs), into existence to assist in its transformational process.

The NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine: Courses and Trainings

It was accredited by NATO on 12 October 2009 and is located in Budapest, Hungary. MILMED COE currently has 10 member nations. Besides Hungary as the founding Framework Nation, 8 countries have joined the Centre so far as Sponsoring Nations: Kingdom of Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Romania and the United Kingdom of Great Britain. The United States of America is in joining process and has already provided personnel since August 2014.

Attend a course

The MILMED COE courses and trainings are open for all medical personnel assigned to NATO/EU/UN and personnel at positions closely connected to multinational cooperation in the field of military medicine.

All MILMED COE courses are listed in the Education and Training Opportunities Catalogue. The mentioned courses are also registered and rewarded by credit points in the Hungarian Continuous Educational System for medical personnel by the Semmelweis Medical University Budapest.

Conditions of the participation

Tuition fee: The basic fee is 405,-EUR per course. The basic course fee for students from Sponsoring Nations is 283,-EUR.

Accommodation, transportation, meals

Course participants are responsible to arrange their own accommodation. There are preferred Hotels/Accommodation locations because MILMED COE provides daily transfers between the preferred hotels and the course venue. For courses organized in Budapest, Hungary, the

recommended accommodation will be included in the student information package and sent via email prior to the course.

For courses organized in Hamburg, Germany the recommended accommodation is at Ibis Hotel Wansbeck. […]

Those who do not wish to stay in the proposed hotels must make their own arrangements and are asked to inform the Course Administrator via email.

Lunch is provided at the course venues for approximately 4, - EUR per meal, if the participant has any dietary restrictions he or she must indicate it in the registration form, the menu details will be available on site. There is no dinner service provided by the COE.

Dress code or uniform requirement

The standard dress code for MILMED COE courses is field uniform (BDU). Civilian dress may also be authorized by the Course Director for certain occasions.

Security

The classification of the courses is NATO UNCLASSIFIED. Students are allowed to bring laptops or mobile phone to the NATO MILMED COE, but they must be switched off during classes. There is a wireless network for internet that is accessible by system with the latest versions operation system and all security updates installed (i.e. Windows XP sp3, Windows 7 and Mac Lion).

Военно-медицинское образование в Европе

Это система обучения и воспитания военно-медицинских работников различных категорий (врачей, фельдшеров, фармацевтов), осуществляемая в специальных военно- медицинских учебных заведениях.

Существуют несколько путей организации военно-медицинского образования: а) создание военно-медицинских учебных заведений, которые предоставляют законченное общемедицинское и военно-медицинское образование (Россия, Австрия); б) создание военно-медицинских учебных заведений, в которых изучаются только военно- медицинские дисциплины, при этом общемедицинские предметы изучались на медицинских факультетах университетов (Германия, Франция).

В Англии военно-медицинское образование было организовано позже, чем в других европейских странах. Толчком к его развитию стали крупные недочеты в военно- медицинской службе во время крымской войны 1854-1855 гг. В 1860 г. была создана военно-медицинская школа /Army Medical School/ с 4-месячным сроком подготовки для лиц, имевших медицинское образование и желавших поступить на военно-медицинскую службу.
