The Military Medical Academy is the oldest institution among military academies and medical institutes in Russia. It dates back to the first quarter of the 18th century.

By the edict of the Emperor Peter I the Army and Admiralty hospitals were established in 1715 to provide soldiers with medical care. Medico-surgical schools, formed on the basis of these hospitals, laid the foundations of the system of Russian military medical education. The schools were united in the general medical college in 1786. In December 18 (29), 1798 Paul I signed the edict of the construction of buildings for teaching theaters of the medical college and a dormitory for its students. The date of signing the edict is considered to be the Foundation Day of the Medico-surgical academy, the Military medical since 1881. The Emperor Alexander I raised it to the rank of ‘the first educational institution of the Empire’: it got the rights of the Academy of Sciences, the permission to elect its academicians and was called ‘Imperial’.

The Imperial Medico-surgical academy became the basis of medical, veterinary and pharmaceutical education in our country.

The first surgical clinic and that of internal diseases were established in 1806. Later departments and clinics such as the Department of Ophthalmology (1818), Mental Disorders (1857), Operative Surgery with the Course of Topographic Anatomy (1865), Pediatrics (1865) and others appeared in Russia for

the first time. The Academy initiated female higher medical education in our country set up a special lady’s course to educate midwifes in 1872.

The academy gained its fame from its teaching staff, among them there were a lot of outstanding scientists and teachers, such as N.K.Karpinsky and P.A.Zagorsky, the founders of the first Russian school of Anatomy, I.M.Sechenov, the founder of the modern physiologic science, the author of a world-known classic psychophysiologic treatise ‘Reflexes of the brain’ (1863). The academy is proud of N.I.Pirogov, the genius of the Russian medicine who worked here for 16 years. The brilliant scientist, world-known physiologist I.P.Pavlov worked at the academy for more than 50 years. He was the first Russian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in 1904 for his research on the Physiology of digestion. Among other famous people who worked at the academy are surgeon N.V.Sklifosovsky, orthopedist G.I.Turner, pathologist V.V.Pashutin, academician K.M.Ber, well-known for his work on Embryology and Comparative Anatomy, helminthologist N.A.Kholodovsky, also known as a translator of Goethe’s Faust, chemist A.P.Borodin, the famous composer.

During the Great Patriotic War the teaching staff and graduates of the Academy took an active part in defending the Motherland. A lot of them were awarded with orders and medals for the valor and bravery in organizing the medical support of the Red Army during the Great Patriotic War.

The USSR government and the Ministry of Defense awarded the Academy with the Order of Lenin (the highest governmental award at that time) and the Order of the Red Banner for its activity. A lot of academy professors and staff were awarded the Title of Hero of Socialist Labour and the Lenin and State Prizes. By the edict of the President of the RF in December 17, 1998 the academy was included in the State Corpus of Highly Valued Properties of Cultural Heritage of the Russian Federation.
