1C Volunteering: Script

This is Kimmeridge Bay on the south coast of England. It is a popular place for diving and snorkelling because of the variety of sea life in the area. It’s Sunday afternoon, and a group of volunteers are getting ready for a day cleaning up the beach. These volunteers are working with the Wildlife Trust organisation. The Wildlife Trust is the largest voluntary organisation in the UK looking after the environment for wildlife. Over 33,000 volunteers help the organisation every year, working in 47 groups around the country.

The group leader today is Steve Trewhella. Steve is a photographer and knows a lot about this area. Before the group starts work, Steve tells them what to look for. There’s a lot of rubbish on the beach. Most of it is plastic and some of it is very difficult to see. These are called nurdles. Nurdles are very small pieces of plastic. In factories, they are made into bottles, bags and all the plastic things we use and buy every day.

Over 250 billion tonnes of nurdles travel around the world to factories every year in huge ships, and millions and millions of them end up in the sea and on beaches around the world. Because they are small, and they look like fish eggs, lots of birds and animals think they are food and eat them. So it is very important that people clean the beaches often.

The volunteers collect over five tonnes of rubbish from the beaches in this area every year. The work they do helps to protect the wildlife in the area. It’s important work and the Wildlife Trust needs lots of volunteers.

So how do you find out about the organisation? Steve If we need volunteers we usually advertise in local papers, or you can find out about it on the Internet, on the Wildlife Trust website. The Dorset volunteers have even got a Facebook group for young people. Steve A lot of young people want to do this, because a lot of the young people may want to go into this line of work afterwards, so it’s good experience for them. And the volunteers can do a variety of jobs. Steve We help talk to people on the beach and we help with practical tasks like beach cleaning and snorkel surveys, things like that. It’s important that the volunteers are hard-working and patient. It is sometimes a difficult job, but it is also rewarding and great for the environment.

Ecological Problems

Since ancient times Nature has served Man, being the source of his life. For thousands of years people lived in harmony with environment and it seemed to them that natural riches were unlimited. But with the development of civilization man's interference in nature began to increase.

Large cities with thousands of smoky industrial enterprises appear all over the world today. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, the land we grow grain and vegetables on.

Every year world industry pollutes the atmosphere with about 1000 million tons of dust and other harmful substances. Many cities suffer from smog. Vast forests are cut and burn in fire. Their disappearance upsets the oxygen balance. As a result some rare species of animals, birds, fish and plants disappear forever, a number of rivers and lakes dry up.

Some progress has been already made in this direction. As many as 159 countries – members of the UNO – have set up environmental protection agencies.

An international environmental research center has been set up on Lake Baikal. The international organization Greenpeace is also doing much to preserve the environment.

But these are only the initial steps and they must be carried onward to protect nature, to save life on the planet not only for the sake of the present but also for the future generations.

Environmental protection

Our earth is our home, so if we want to protect our home, we should protect our environment from harmful effects of human activity. Some of these activities cause pollution. Pollution now is a very important problem. Some of these problems are: the ozone holes, global warming (or green-house effect), acid rain … The ozone layer is a layer of gases which stop harmful radiation from the sun protecting the earth. Recent research shows that there is a hole in part of the ozone layer which is caused by smoke from factories, car exhaust fumes. Global warming is an increase in world temperature caused by an increase in carbon dioxide. Acid rain is rain that contains dangerous chemicals, this is caused by smoke from factories. Another problem is poisons in food.

Farmers often spray chemicals in crops to safe them from pests. These chemicals are called pesticides. Scientists have found that pesticides often end up in our food and they can cause health problems – especially for kids. The seas are in danger. They are filled with poison: industrial, chemical, nuclear waste. Every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out for ever. We should not waste resources but try save them. …Now people are beginning to realize that environmental problems are not somebody else’s. They make different organization, whose aim is conservation. For example “GREEN PEACE” , “FRIEND OF THE EARTH” and others. Everyday millions of people from all over the world do everything to protect our environment.
