NICOLAS COPERNICUS

(1473 - 1542)

1. Nicolas Koppernigk was born in Poland on February 19, 1473. In his time educated men wrote in Latin and adopted Latinized names. For this reason Koppernigk became Copernicus. Не has been known tо mankind by that name.

2. The greatest of all Polish scientists studied at the University of Krakow, where he was interested in mathematics and painting. In 1496 he went to Italy and spent ten years there, studying medicine and law. When he finally returned to Poland in 1506, he took up the practice of medicine, helping both the rich and poor. But his main interest was astronomy. That also developed out of his Italian travels. Italy in those days was the intellectual centre of the world. New ideas were being born there. Some of them questioned the prevailing theory of the motions of the heavenly bodies.....
