Kernel Flow: a device for noninvasive brain imagingBrain imaging refers to the usually non-invasive or minimally invasive methods that allow visualisation of brain structure or function. Neuroimaging is the use of quantitative (computational) methods to study the structure and function of the central nervous system, developed as an objective way to scientifically study the brain of a healthy person in a non-invasive way. It is also increasingly being used for quantitative research into brain disease and mental illness. Neuroimaging is a very interdisciplinary field of research and not a medical specialty.Brain imaging techniques allow non-invasive imaging of brain structure and function.
This is achieved either by directly measuring the currents and magnetic fields generated by neuronal activity, by administering radioisotope agents to highlight areas through emitted radiation, or by measuring tissue-specific responses to an externally applied energy source such as a magnetic field. The resulting signals provide identifying information about the structures and physiological activity of the brain, providing answers to questions about structural integrity, especially relevant in clinical applications, as well as linking brain function to human cognition and behaviour.Kernel is a privately held company based in Los Angeles, California that specializes in neuroscience and the development of brain-machine interfaces. The company was founded by entrepreneur Bryan Johnson, the former owner of Braintree, a payments company that was acquired by PayPal in 2013. Johnson is convinced that a combination of human and artificial intelligence is inevitable in the future, which is why he defines the goal of his company Kernel as deciphering the basic functions of the brain.
Bryan Johnson founded Kernel in 2016. The company later shifted its focus to building equipment that measures the electrical and hemodynamic signals produced by the brain. In 2020, Kernel showed off a pair of helmet-like devices that can see and record brain activity. Johnson hopes to bring the brain online with Kernel. Research may include Alzheimer's disease, aging, concussions, meditation states, and strokes. The company said the devices could be used to help paralyzed people communicate, or people with mental health issues access new therapies. By July 2020, Kernel had raised $53 million from outside investors after Johnson had invested $54 million in the company since its inception.The company sponsors research on various neurological diseases, such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's, and is also involved in the study of common mental disorders, depression and anxiety. Kernel is one of the few companies investigating the links between the human brain and computer interfaces, with Neuralink and Facebook among others. In May 2020, Kernel introduced two devices for tracking brain activity. The device, the principles of which will be discussed in this paper, is called Kernel Flow.Kernel Flow can monitor, record and visualize brain activity data. At the heart of this device is a lightweight headgear that does not restrict the natural movement of the head, and also includes a wide range of stimuli and peripherals, and user interaction.
