The main theories on consumer behavior aim to explain the decision-making process that individuals go through when choosing a tourist destination, booking a hotel or purchasing any other related service. This essay will provide a summary of the main theories on consumer behavior in tourism and hospitality, and discuss how consumer behavior has changed over the last few decades and how organizations have adapted to these changes.
2. Consumer behavior theories in tourism and hospitality
The push and pull theory of consumer behavior in tourism is one of the earliest and most widely recognized theories in the field. This theory suggests that tourists are motivated to travel by both push and pull factors (Gössling, S., 2004). Push factors refer to the reasons why tourists want to leave their home environment, such as boredom, stress, or a desire for adventure. Pull factors, on the other hand, are the attractions and benefits of the destination, such as its scenic beauty, cultural heritage, or opportunities for recreation.
The decision-making process model is another important theory of consumer behavior in tourism. This model suggests that tourists go through a series of steps when making a travel decision, including problem recognition, information search, evaluation of alternatives, and purchase decision (Teixeira and Ratten, 2011).
Psychological theories of consumer behavior in tourism also play an important role in explaining the decisions that tourists make. For example, motivation theory suggests that tourists are motivated by a variety of psychological needs, such as the need for achievement, the need for social interaction, or the need for escape. Perception theory, on the other hand, suggests that tourists form their perceptions of a destination based on a variety of sensory and cognitive inputs, such as the destination’s natural beauty, cultural heritage, or reputation for safety (Fishbein and Ajzen, 1975).
3. Changes in consumer behavior
Consumer behavior in tourism and hospitality has undergone significant changes in the last few decades. The growth of the tourism industry, advances in technology, and changes in societal attitudes and values have all contributed to these changes. Consumers are now more likely to choose destinations, accommodations, and activities that prioritize environmental and social responsibility (Wittmer and Gössling, 2013).

Demographic trends have also played a role in changing consumer behavior in the tourism and hospitality industry. The aging of the baby boomer generation has resulted in an increased demand for senior-friendly destinations and accommodations, while the rise of the millennial generation has led to a greater emphasis on adventure and experiential travel (Hsu and Lee, 2015).
5) Greater Emphasis on Health and Wellness:
Another notable change in consumer behavior in the tourism and hospitality industry is the growing emphasis on health and wellness. Today, consumers are seeking out destinations and activities that promote physical and mental well-being, such as spa resorts, yoga retreats, and outdoor adventure activities (Hartmann and Apaolaza-Ibáñez, 2017).
