Inclusion describes the special needs students’ right to study together with general education students. There are 2 types of inclusion: partial inclusion and full inclusion. With partial inclusion special needs students are educated in general education classes for part of the day. They may have one or two classes where they are pulled out to work with a specialist. In comparison to it, in full inclusion special needs students are always educated with their non-disabled peers.
The inclusion education is based on the philosophy that special needs students belong in the general education classroom. Like any philosophy, it has its supporters and opponents.
Supporters of inclusive education believe that it is wrong to deny special needs children the right to belong in the same classrooms as other students. As is known, everyone has a sense of belonging.
Furthermore, in inclusion settings special needs students can have more positive peer interactions and avoid bullying. They often get to work in small groups, have a chance to manage group activities by themselves and, importantly, feel accepted and worthy.
What’s more, special education students can improve their communication skills. It goes without saying that effective communication is needed to plan, organize and lead others in the real world. Another advantage is that being in the general education classroom is better for the development of social skills and career readiness for special needs students.
Lastly, placing special needs students in an inclusion setting leads to an increased level of self-esteem for those students.
Having considered the advantages of inclusion, let’s now look at what arguments opponents of inclusion have.
Firstly, if a special needs student is in an inclusion classroom, it is necessary of the school to provide the special education teacher for that child. It leads to a problem of co-teaching, which can have the following forms:
Notwithstanding the various forms of co–teaching, both the general education teacher and the special education teacher must share the responsibility of teaching all students and work together. For a successful inclusion classroom teachers need time to plan lessons together, design resources and quizzes, and discuss classroom activity. That is, it's important that they are both on the same page. However, according to the opponents, such an understanding is not easy to achieve.
