PART 1. SUMMARIZING
Activity 2. From the list below select the features a good summary should have and write them down 1 The author’s name and the title of the article 2 Graphs and tables 3 Detailed explanations 4 The author’s main idea 5 Details to support the idea 6 Your own views on the problem 7 As much of the original text as possible 8 Quotations 9 Formal expressions, linking words
Activity 3. Read the example summary below and say what kind of misunderstanding takes place in a college classroom. Write down your answer. In his article “Mo Allusions in the Classroom,” Jaime O’Neill emphasises the existing misunderstanding between students and teachers in a college classroom. He claims that teachers assume their students have basic knowledge they do not really possess. Moreover, students do not ask questions because they do not want to show their ignorance. O’Neill supports his conclusions by the results of the general knowledge test he administered to his students, which they answered more incorrectly than correctly. The author adds that, according to recent polls, a large portion of adults in the US are ignorant about the history of the country and the planet they live on. Finally, O’Neill expresses his opinion that instructors should be responsible for giving general information to their students.
Activity 4. Read the summary below and answer in writing if the original article is positive or negative about the educational reforms and what words or phrases made you think so. Complete the summary with the missing words the box below assume, inform, express, add, suggest, state, argue John Tierney, in “The Coming Revolution in Public Education, 1) e_________ the belief that the Educational Reforms in the USA are harmful. The author 2) i____________ us that, as a result of the reform initiatives, standardized tests and assessments have been introduced in public schools and teachers held accountable for the results. The refoms, he 3) a____________, also recommend controlling classrom instruction. He then points out that the reforms have profit motives and involve corporate interests. Further on the reader is informed about the negative reaction of the public and the teachers to these reforms. The author 4) s___________ that teachers should be given more autonomy and respected as professionals. Tierney then 5) a___________ that standardization leads to the loss of individuality and diversity. Finally, the author 6) a___________ that public education is not aimed at bringing in money, and that is why business should not be involved. As a conclusion, Tierney 7) s_____________ that these kinds of reforms should be opposed.
Activity 5. Rewrite the summary below adding introductory phrases and logical connectors The paper by By Gregg F. Melde and Gary R. Waymire summaries ANF's cobalt reduction program to date and establishes its further steps in reducing this source of system radiation to the lowest possible cost-effective level. ANF has been working with component vendors over the past five years to purchase low cobalt fuel assembly components. With the need for additional cobalt reductions, special low cobalt melts have been ordered. The lower practical limit for cobalt in castings is 0.05 weight percent because of foundry contamination and the analytical problems associated with accurately measuring cobalt at these levels. Even though ANF orders some parts in small quantities, it has been possible to obtain most items with low cobalt content. ANF will continue to strive to obtain the lowest cobalt content available without incurring large additional costs. The above efforts have allowed ANF to maintain most components below 0.05 weight percent cobalt although, in some cases, cobalt content has exceeded these levels for limited situations.
Activity 6. On the Internet, search for open access academic journals in your field of study. From those journals select 3 articles in your area of research and write a short summary (150-250 words) for each of them. Attach a copy of each article and, if not available on the title page of an article attached, its bibliographical description [выходные данные (Автор и название статьи, название научного журнала, год, номер, диапазон страниц, DOI или URL)]

PART 3. PREPARING A PRESENTATION
Activity 18. Read the text below and answer the questions in writing WHAT MAKES A SUCCESSFUL PRESENTATION Presentation is the process of presenting the content of a topic to an audience. A good “professional” presentation is one where you put the audience first. You think about how the audience would most like to receive the information you are giving. Ask yourself who will be there (scientists, expert or not expert in your field, students, nonexperts) and target your presentation accordingly. Most likely, the audience will be a mix, so have something for all. Keep in mind that the audience might be tired or not interested in your topic. Non-experts usually ‘tune out’ within 2 minutes while experts might ‘stay tuned’ a little longer – about 5 minutes. So, the key to an effective presentation is that you have a few main points which you want the audience to remember and that you highlight these points during the presentation in an interesting, and if possible, enthusiastic way....
1. What is a presentation? 2. What presentation may be called a ‘professional’ one? 3. How long do expert and not expert members of the audience usually stay focused? 4. What is the key to an effective presentation? 5. In what way are good presentations delivered? 6. What can you say about the structure of a presentation? 7. What do you think about the amount of detail and technical information in your presentation and on your slides? 8. Can you read the slides? 9. Should you make references to the slides? 10.Should you concentrate more on your English or the contents of your presentation?
Activity 19. Say which of the following goals you should or should not try to achieve in your presentation. Write down your answers 1. Impress the audience 2. Make the audience want to read your paper 3. Tell them all you know about a subject 4. Give the audience a clear idea of what your is 5. Present every little detail of your work 6. Get feedback on your work
Activity 20. Read the text below and answer the questions in writing WRITING A SCRIPT OF A PRESENTATION Structure. The most common formula for structuring a presentation is introduction – body – conclusion. It is used frequently because it is logical and works well. One of the oldest methods of public speaking is ‘tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you told them’. The introduction ‘tells them’ what the presentation will be about, the body gives the information with supporting details, and the conclusion summarizes and restates the main message of the presentation. By using repetition you reinforce your key message. A good and easy structure to follow when preparing your script is to imagine that you are telling a story. The title of your presentation is the title (summary) of your story. You then structure the body of your presentation around your most important points. There shouldn’t be too many of them to clearly deliver your key message. The exact number depends upon your specific topic but traditionally 3 or 4 seem to be optimal and 7 is about the maximum that most people can handle in one sitting....
1. What is the most common structure of presentations? 2. What is the function of the introduction? 3. What is the function of the body? 4. What is the function of the conclusion? 5. What should the title of the presentation contain? 6. How many points can the body include? 7. What kind of information does the introduction contain? 8. What kind of information does the body contain? 9. What kind of information does the conclusion contain? 10.What do you think about including the details into your presentation?
Activity 21. Identify the structure of the fragment, divide it into paragraphs and give it a title. Write down the revised fragment Throughout the world, according to some estimates, 700,000 pieces of data are lost every day. It happens due to inks fading, magnetic tape demagnetizing, etc. There are about 100 billion pieces of data that are still on paper, microfilm or magnetic tape in an unusable format. Unusable formats are those which neither computers nor scientists can use efficiently. Environmental data rescue is a collection of processes that store historical and modern environmental data in a usable format. Usable formats are those suitable for computer storage. And the rescue processes are those which allow digitizing the data. These processes typically include photography and scanning. As soon as environmental data stored on paper medium are scanned or photographed by a digital camera, the images are sent to a facility where they are entered into a computer database. The digitized data is used to help a large range of people from farmers to engineers as well as in scientific research. The rescued data is analyzed and used in scientific models. Historical weather information helps meteorologists and climatologists understand past trends in weather changes and forecast future ones.
Activity 22. Answer the questions in writing. Use the text in Activity 20 as a reference 1. Why are transitions important? 2. What should transitions be like? 3. In what places of your presentation should you make transitions? 4. Why is the final transition particularly important?
Activity 23. Study the list of the possible transition phrases below TRANSITIONS Moving on to the main body of the presentation Let me start by looking at . . . First I’d like to give you a bit of background. So why did we undertake this research? Well, . . . So what were our main objectives? Well, . . . Introducing a new element or topic With regard to x . . . As far as x is concerned . . . Regarding x . . . Signaling that the topic is about to change Before I give you some more detailed statistics and my overall conclusions, I am just going to show you how our results can be generalized to a wider scenario. In a few minutes I am going to tell you about X and Y, which I hope should explain why we did this research in the first place. But first I want to talk to you about . . . Showing where you are in the original agenda Okay so this is where we are .. This is what we’ve looked at so far. So, we’re now on page 10 of the handout. Referring to previous topic to introduce next topic Before moving on to Z, I’d just like to reiterate what I said about Y. Okay, so that’s all I wanted to say about X and Y. Now let’s look at Z. Having considered X, let’s go on and look at Y. Not only have we experienced success with X, but also with Y. We’ve focused on X, equally important is Y. You remember that I said X was used for Y [go back to relevant slide], well now we’re going to see how it can be used for Z. Getting the audience interested in the next topic Did you know that you can do X with Y? You didn’t, well in the next section of this presentation I’ll be telling you how. Direct transition Let me now move onto the question of . . . This brings me to my next point . . . Next I would like to examine . . . Now we’re going to look at Z. // Now I’d like to show you Z. // Now I’d like to talk about Z. Okay, let’s move on to Z. Now we are going to do X. X will help you to do Y.
Activity 24. Write down as many transition sentences using the elements from each column Before I move on to my next point This brings This leads Let’s now turn to As I mentioned I’d like to Let’s go back to what As I said earlier come back to the issue let me go we were discussing to the next before, I’d like to give you us directly to my I’ll be focusing on next question. point, which is efficiency. this point later. our methods. a brief overview of my experiments earlier through the main issues once of operation and maintenance
Activity 25. In the text below, find introductory and transitional phrases and write them out OR rewrite the text and underline them (9 expressions) In this paper I would like to raise some questions related to the gas-cooled reactor design. As you know, this type of reactors is used in Great Britain. I’d like to draw your attention to the fact that the uranium rods are clad with magnox. This alloy (99 per cent magnesium, 1 percent aluminum) gave its name to the first generation of gas-cooled, graphite-moderated power reactors. I’d like to emphasize that despite the success of the first generation stations they have some disadvantages. On the one hand, magnox has a low melting point; on the other hand, the magnox stations have relatively low power density. In this connection it is necessary to say that both disadvantages have to some extent been overcome in the second generation of this type of reactors. On the whole, I’d like to add that gas-cooled reactors have many advantages and Great Britain is planning to employ them in future.
Activity 26.Give a title to the following fragment. Rewrite the fragment adding the proper transitions and dividing it into paragraphs The function of transformers is changing the voltage from one value to another. This is accomplished by having more turns on one winding than on the other. If the primary winding has 200 turns and the secondary has 1000 turns then the voltage available at the secondary terminals will be 1000:200=5 times as great as the EMF impressed upon the primary. The ratio of the number of turns in the high-voltage winding to the number of turns in the low-voltage winding is called the ratio of transformation. When the transformer is used for delivering energy at a higher voltage then that at which energy is received it is called a step-up transformer. When the transformer is used for lowering the voltage it is called a step-down transformer. Transformers are much used in transmitting and distributing electrical energy over long distances.
Activity 27. Answer the questions in writing. Use the text in Activity 20 as a reference 1. Are longer or shorter sentences preferred in presentations? 2. Can you use different words for one key concept? 3. Can you leave out details in your talk? If you do so, what can you say to avoid being unprofessional? 4. Can you leave out transition phrases? 5. Would you rather use verbs or nouns? Why? 6. Why should abstract nouns be avoided? 7. Will you use generic or precise numbers in your talk? 8. What makes your talk sound less formal and more friendly?
