The Russian Federation

Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It occupies about one-seventh of the earth‟s surface. It„s total
area is over 17 million square kilometres. Russia encompasses within its territory immense differences in climate,
economic conditions and cultural traditions. It is one of the largest administrative areas in the world. The country is
washed by 12 seas of 3 oceans: the Pacific, the Arctic and the Atlantic. The Russian Federation borders on fourteen
countries including the former republics of the USSR, which are now independent states. In the south Russia borders
on China, Mongolia, Korea, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Azerbaijan. In the west it borders on Norway, Finland, the Baltic
states, Belorussia, the Ukraine. It also has a sea-border with the USA.
Landscape. The land of Russia varies a lot from heavy forests to barren deserts, from high peaked mountains to deep
valleys. But most of the territory is flat. Russia is located on two plains. They are: the Great Russian Plain and the
West Siberian Lowland. There are three main mountain chains in Russia: the Urals, the Caucasus and the Altai. The
longest mountain chain, the Urals, divides the European and Asian parts of the Russian Federation.
Russia is a land of long rivers and deep lakes. The world‟s deepest lake (1,600 metres) is Lake Baikal. It contains one-
fifth of the world‟s fresh water. There are over two million rivers in Russia. The most important of them are the
Volga, Europe‟s biggest river, flowing into the Caspian Sea, the three mighty Siberian rivers (the Ob, the Yenisei and
the Lena) and the Amur in the Far East, flowing into the Pacific Ocean.
The Russian Federation has one-sixth of the world‟s forests. They are concentrated in the European north of the
country, in the Far East and in Siberia.
Russia is rich in mineral resources. It has deposits of oil and natural gas, coal, iron, zinc, nickel, lead, gold, aluminium
and other non-ferrous metals.
Population. The current population of Russia is about 150 million people. The Russian Federation is a multinational
state, over 100 nationalities live in it, each with its own language, culture and traditions. 82 per cent of the
population are ethnic Russians. 70 per cent of the population live in cities.
